Sunshine on my should makes me happy

Sunshine provides us with 90% of our vitamin D, which helps protect against disease and slows the ageing process. Just 10-15 minutes a day is enough to boost your immune system. So take time to find a sunny spot and really relish the warm winter sun touching your skin, your hands, arms, face, neck and feel it doing good.

Eat healthy

Foods high in Vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong. Try and keep lemon, kiwi fruit, capsicum and broccoli in your weekly diet. Sometimes eating fruit can be harder in winter so try juicing, juices that consist of two-thirds vegetables and one-third fruit are most beneficial. A blend of carrot, beetroot, spinach and lemon is a stress-busting combination that will boost your immune system.

Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter. Catch up with friends over coffee, make sure you continue to attend your hobby, spiritual, sporting, study or music groups even if it is cold outside.

Make your move

Sit less move more. Often exercise can be neglected but exercise has been proven to reduce the number of sick days taken by people. A brisk walk several times a week is all it takes to boost your immune system. Regular aerobic exercise, five or more days a week for more than 20 minutes a day, rises above all other lifestyle factors in lowering sick days during the winter cold season. No need to go overboard because overly strenuous exercise releases the stress hormone, cortisol, in the body, which can weaken the immune system.

Sleep well sweetheart

Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. Listen to your body, when it feels tired you need to respond otherwise you may become run down and far more susceptible to picking up a cold or flu. Schedule in a good nights sleep each night and your body will thank you.
